A new place for creative work.

Who we are

Gaswerksiedlung operates since early 2018 as a studio house and strives to provide a challenging and supporting platform for creative activities of all kind. There is a growing sense to be part of a unique Gaswerk-community. Next to numerous band rooms, recording and artist studios, there are carpenter and weaving workshops as well as architects and filmmakers.

Gaswerksiedlung offers a café and cantine called “Muschkebart” at Blockdammweg 1 which also functions as a charming event space. Well, and there is the Gaswerk garden home to numerous parties and events and welcoming to dedicated urban gardeners. We are about 300 Gaswerkers now and we want to grow further!

Where we are

Gaswerksiedlung is located on the southeastern fringes of central Berlin a 3 km tram or bike ride away from busy Ostkreuz. Famous Sisyphos is just a short walk to the north and ambitious Funkhaus Nalepastrasse to the south. But probably the most imposing building next door is the power station Heizkraftwerk Klingenberg, landlord of Gaswerksiedlung and source of heating to 300,000 households. However, probably the biggest attraction is the proximity to the river Spree with all its marinas, scenic river bank walks and ever cleaner water.

A bit of history

Gaswerksiedlung was built between 1925-26 by Ernst Engelmann and Emil Fangmeyer for the workers and staff of the coal-to-gas plant that was located right behind Gaswerksiedlung.

Operations of the industrial site have been discontinued in the 1980s and the former grounds have since been cleaned thoroughly. The current scrub land awaits its future use as a new thermal power plant but will also partly be kept as a protected area. A flock of sheep is grazing behind Gaswerksiedlung!

The development plan for south-Rummelsburg launched in 2011 provided for Gaswerksiedlung to convert from residential to commercial usage. Due to its monument protected status and small scale floor layout its conversion into a studio house for all kind of creative “industries” was just logic.

Currently, Gaswerksiedlung offers a home to numerous musicians, artists of all kind, stage builders, filmmakers…

It is owned by Vattenfall Wärme AG and operated by Gaswerksiedlung Berlin GmbH.
